Head-to-head · SA-AEO-Bench Q2 2026

South African brands in AI search, compared side by side.

The same question asked of ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini will name very different South African brands. Capitec dominates one engine. FNB shows up first in another. The gap between the two is bigger than most boardrooms think — and it changes by category, by engine, by question.

Below: head-to-head comparisons of the SA brand pairs we measured in the Q2 2026 cycle of the SA-AEO-Bench. 10 pairs across banking, telecom, medical aid, short-term insurance and retail. Each page shows the AI-visibility split, the source mix shaping each brand’s AI answer, and where the two diverge.

Why comparisons matter

AI doesn’t list ten links. It names two or three brands.

01

Consideration is binary.

When a buyer asks ChatGPT “best SA medical aid for a young family”, three names get spoken. Yours is one of them, or it isn’t. There’s no second page.

02

Per-engine variance is real.

Capitec is the default answer on one engine for SA retail banking. Standard Bank gets named first on another. Discovery Bank holds a third. A single AI strategy almost never works.

03

Source mix predicts narrative.

The SA publications and complaint forums feeding each AI’s answer about your brand are not the same as the ones feeding your competitor’s answer. That asymmetry shapes how AI describes both of you.
